TOURIST ACCOMMODATION IN VAMOS

The complex “Pergyros” is found in two plots of land of total surface area 2000 m², inside the settlement of Vamos, Prefecture of Chania, Crete and consists of twelve alternative lifestyle houses.

Northerly, the plot of land enjoys a sea view, while westerly it borders visually a lush pine forest, around which basic community life activities are developed, such as entertainment and education, and which benefit the occupation of “Pergyros”. The intention in the design of these twelve houses is the optimal integration of this new complex in the form of the housing environment of Vamos village. Walking in the neighborhood of “Pergyros”, we can identify special characteristics of the architecture of Vamos, so much in the construction of the buildings, their location in the plot of land, their distances from one another, their elements concerning morphology and volume. More specifically, the philosophy in the design of the twelve houses of our plot of land incorporates the factors of “chance” and “time”, special characteristics of a village. These features are revealed by the random variations of the houses, the “imperfections” of their volumes, the subsequent additions we encounter or by the differentiations in the materials and the construction method.

Each house, which constitutes an independent unit, different from any other, offers its inhabitant the feeling that it belongs to a large neighborhood of twelve houses, which is part of a larger one, that of the village. The visual retreats from and towards every house may be determined either by the help of structural elements (such as the building volumes) or by the appropriate planting or the creation of appropriate hypsometrical differences. The central square which is located at the heart of the plot of land acts as a place of relaxation and meeting for the neighborhood, housing a communal building, which functions as a coffee house for the neighborhood. Respectively, at the entrance of the plot of land you can find two shops not only for “pergyros” but also for the remaining of the village. These shops could be used as grocery shops or bakery, thus helping “pergyros” complex to become part of the existing web of the village.
